Diphenylamine is a light tan to brown solid with a pleasant odor. Sinks in water. (USCG, 1999)

  • Manufacture of dyes; stabilizing nitrocellulose explosives and celluloid; in analytical chemistry for detection of nitrates, chlorates and other oxidizing substances with which, in presence of sulfuric acid, it gives a deep-blue color.
  • VET: Topically in anti-screwworm mixtures; in test for nitrate or nitrate poisoning.
  • Rubber antioxidants and accelerators, solid rocket propellants, pesticides, dyes, pharmaceuticals, storage preservation of apples, stabilizer for nitrocellulose.
