Sand Stabilization: Stopping Wind-Blown Sand and Desert Dust on Roads

Drifting sand covers roads, reduces driving safety and makes cities dusty, and keeping it clear costs road and city administrations time and money. TerraSystem's specially developed binder is sprayed onto the sand and bonds the grains at their contact points, so the wind can no longer carry the surface away. Developed and produced in Germany; applied by TerraSystem's own technical crew.

What is sand stabilization?

In desert regions the wind moves loose sand onto highways, roads and into cities. Sand hills form on the carriageway, roads get dirty, and visibility and grip drop; in bad conditions this can lead to accidents.

Sand stabilization fixes the sand where it lies. A special adhesive is sprayed onto the sand surface and bonds individual grains to each other only at their contact points. The bonded layer resists thrust and traction forces, so the wind can no longer lift and carry the sand.

  • Applied by spraying: no excavation, no imported material

  • Bonds the existing sand in place

  • Developed, researched and produced in Germany

Where is sand stabilization used?

Wherever loose sand reaches traffic areas or settlements.

01

Highways and desert roads

Sand-prone shoulders and verges next to the carriageway, where drifting sand builds up on the road.

02

Cities and settlements

Open sandy areas at the edge of towns that produce dust in windy weather.

03

Industrial and logistics sites

Unpaved sandy areas around plants, yards and access roads.

04

Next to railway lines

Sand-prone sections alongside the track, assessed project by project.

Why stabilize sand?

  • Fewer sand hills on the carriageway and better driving safety

  • Lower cleaning costs for road and city administrations

  • Less dust in towns

  • The sand stays where it is: no excavation

  • Spray application with a specially developed adhesive

  • Applied by TerraSystem's own technical crew: quality and warranty from the manufacturer

How the system works

The principle is the same as in TerraSystem ballast bonding: the binder connects the grains only at their contact points.

BondingPoint bonding of single sand grains at their contact points
EffectThe bonded surface resists thrust and traction forces; the wind no longer carries the sand

How a sand stabilization project runs

  1. 1
    Enquiry

Location, area and the problem (sand on the road, dust); photos and a map are enough to start.

  2. 2
    Assessment

TerraSystem engineers assess the sand type, wind direction and traffic.

  3. 3
    Trial section

We recommend starting with a trial section to confirm the result on site.

  4. 4
    Application

TerraSystem's own technical crew sprays the binder on the agreed area.

Sand stabilization: frequently asked questions

What is sand stabilization?

Fixing loose sand in place so that the wind can no longer carry it. TerraSystem sprays a special binder onto the sand that bonds the grains at their contact points.

How is it applied?

By a spray process directly onto the sand surface. No excavation or imported material is needed.

Where is it used?

On sand-prone road shoulders and verges, open sandy areas at the edge of towns and unpaved sandy areas at industrial and logistics sites. Sections next to railway lines are assessed project by project.

Is it the same product as ballast bonding?

It is based on TerraSystem's ballast bonding system and works on the same principle, point bonding of grains, with an adhesive specially developed for sand.

How much does it cost per m²?

It depends on the area, sand type and site conditions. Send us the location and area and we will prepare an assessment and a quote.

Who carries out the application?

TerraSystem's own technical crew on every project, for quality and warranty. Klar Chem coordinates the project and the quote.

Is sand a problem on your roads?

Tell us the location and the area; photos and a map are enough. We will arrange an assessment with TerraSystem engineers.
