Water-Permeable Paving: Seamless Surfaces Without Drainage

TerraSystem permeable paving bonds crushed stone and granulate at their contact points into a seamless, load-bearing surface with about 40% voids. Rainwater soaks straight into the ground, so the surface can be laid level, without a drainage slope and largely without sewers. For paths, squares, car parks and roads; installed by TerraSystem's own technical crew.

What is permeable paving?

Permeable paving is a road and path surface in which each grain is coated with binder and bonded to its neighbours only at the contact points. The open spaces between the grains, about 40% of the volume, let water pass through the surface into the ground.

It can supplement or replace asphalt and concrete. Because water does not run off, the surface needs no drainage slope, aquaplaning does not occur and there is less spray. It is classified in water hazard class 0 (WGK 0).

  • Rainwater returns to the ground instead of the sewer

  • No drainage slope or gullies needed

  • Elastic, dimensionally stable and frost-resistant

Where is permeable paving used?

From footpaths to roads with heavy traffic.

01

Paths and squares

Park paths, pedestrian zones and town squares with a seamless, puddle-free surface.

02

Car parks and driveways

Parking areas and access roads that drain on the spot.

03

Roads

With a 15 cm base course and a 4 cm surface course it is suitable for heavy traffic.

04

Cycle paths

Smooth, skid-resistant surfaces in many colours.

05

Courtyards and residential areas

Unsealed surfaces that reduce run-off and sealing charges.

06

Tree surrounds

Permeable surfaces around trees; see our tree grate systems.

Why permeable paving?

  • No aquaplaning, less splash water, less ice formation

  • Rainwater soaks away: smaller or no storm sewers

  • No frost damage: the voids leave room for water to expand

  • Temperature-resistant from –30 to +100 °C; no rutting in heat

  • Noise is absorbed in the surface instead of being reflected

  • Water hazard class 0: no leaching of harmful substances

  • Easy to clean; repairs blend in without visible joints

  • Installed by TerraSystem's own technical crew

How a permeable paving project runs

  1. 1
    Enquiry

Area, use (pedestrians, cars, trucks) and existing substrate; photos and a plan are enough.

  2. 2
    Design

Choice of layer build-up and granulate: colour and grain size.

  3. 3
    Quote

A quote based on area, build-up and site conditions.

  4. 4
    Installation

TerraSystem's own crew lays the base and surface courses with standard road-building equipment; load-bearing after 24 hours.

Permeable paving: frequently asked questions

What is permeable paving?

A surface of stone and granulate bonded at their contact points, with about 40% voids, so that water drains through it into the ground.

Can cars and trucks drive on it?

Yes. With a 15 cm base course and a 4 cm surface course it is suitable for heavy traffic. In TU Munich tests no rutting occurred at a tyre contact pressure of up to 0.8 N/mm².

Does it clog over time?

Long-term tests in Mannheim and Freiburg showed no significant reduction in seepage after 10 years with a 1–3 mm surface; normal street cleaning keeps the pores open.

Is it frost-resistant?

Yes. The voids give water room to expand, so frost damage and potholes do not occur.

How much does it cost per m²?

It depends on the area, traffic load, build-up and site. Send us the area and use and we will prepare a quote. Savings on drainage and sewers belong in the comparison.

Who installs it?

TerraSystem's own technical crew on every project. Klar Chem is your contact for design, quotes and coordination.

Planning a path, square or car park?

Tell us the area, use and existing substrate. We will recommend a build-up and send you a quote.
