Permeable Tree Grates: Seamless Tree Surrounds That Let Water Through

The TerraSystem tree grate system (TS-TGS) is a drainable, seamless surface around the tree trunk. It lets rain and irrigation water reach the roots, unseals the ground and protects the tree pit, while staying walkable and easy to clean. Shape, colour and grain are adapted to each site; installed by TerraSystem's own technical crew.

What is a permeable tree grate?

Instead of a cast-iron grate or loose gravel, the tree pit is covered with decorative chippings bound with a solvent-free resin. The open-pore surface lets water through, and the area around the trunk is no longer sealed.

The shape is made to measure for the site and the tree species, with different edge profiles. The surface can be made from colour quartz, glass or natural chippings, so it matches the surrounding paving.

  • Permanent watering of the tree while the ground is unsealed

  • For new plantings and existing trees; the root run is taken into account

  • Fully recyclable, environmentally friendly materials

Where are tree grates used?

Wherever trees stand in paved areas.

01

Streets and pavements

Tree pits in pavements stay walkable and do not form trip edges.

02

Squares and pedestrian zones

Seamless surfaces in the colour of the surrounding paving or as a contrast.

03

Car parks

Tree pits between parking bays.

04

Parks, schools and campuses

Robust, easy-to-clean surrounds in high-footfall areas.

Why TerraSystem tree grates?

  • Water reaches the roots: rain and irrigation water drain through

  • Unseals the ground around the tree

  • Robust protection against environmental influences

  • Easy to install, easy to clean and maintain

  • Any shape: round, square or free-form

  • Many colours and grains: colour quartz, glass or natural chippings

  • Solvent-free, odour-neutral binders

  • Installed by TerraSystem's own technical crew

System data (TS-TGS)

Two binders are available: the UV-stable 1-component TS 01 on a flexibilised polyurethane basis, or the 2-component TS 02 on an epoxy basis. With TS 02 a slight colour change must be expected under UV exposure.

How a tree grate is installed

  1. 1
    Excavation

The tree pit is excavated to 15–20 cm, taking the roots into account.

  2. 2
    Sub-base

8–11 mm chippings are filled in and compacted.

  3. 3
    Surface

Binder and decorative grain are mixed, laid 2–4 cm thick, levelled and compacted.

  4. 4
    Sealing

The surface is finally coated with 350–500 g/m² binder.

Tree grates: frequently asked questions

What is a permeable tree grate?

A seamless, open-pore surface of bound chippings around a tree trunk. Water drains through it to the roots and the ground stays unsealed.

Is it suitable for existing trees?

Yes, for new plantings and existing trees. The root run is always taken into account.

Which colours are possible?

Colour quartz, glass or natural chippings in many colours and grains, so the surface can match or contrast with the paving.

Does the colour fade?

Outdoors the UV-stable PU binder TS 01 is recommended. With the epoxy binder TS 02 a slight colour change under UV must be expected.

How much does a tree grate cost?

It depends on the number, size and shape of the tree pits and the chosen surface. Send us the number and dimensions and we will prepare a quote.

Who installs it?

TerraSystem's own technical crew on every project. Klar Chem is your contact for selection, quotes and coordination.
